We are bringing up an obese society. Kindly resist the temptation of having fast food or junk food which is known to contain higher concentration of trans fatty acids and saturated fats. You are paying to fast food restaurants for degrading your health. These unnecessary fats are not at all required by our body. High cholesterol levels cause a multitude of health hazards either directly or indirectly. So it is high time the people, especially the sexagenarian’s and septuagenarian’s take this issue seriously. It is the mission of every individual to pass on the knowledge of ill-effects of higher Low Density Lipoprotein cholesterol levels to the younger generation. Persistent hypertension or high blood pressure – a consequence of high cholesterol levels apart from posing a great threat to the heart is also a leading cause for chronic renal failure. If you follow the safety precautions for eliminating bad cholesterol it will become a habit in old age.

Both dieting and exercise must go in synchronization with each other. It is a team game and not a one man video game. If you are lethargic to exercise how will your muscles develop? Will not this laziness weaken the body’s immune system? Your body will lack sufficient nutrition which in turn leads to fatigueness and weak muscles. Consider the other case of a person who exercises a lot without proper diet. He will not gain and will be maintaining the same weight. In rare cases it may even lead to sudden heart attack due to loads of strain to the heart. So give due importance to both.

So what modifications are required in our food habits to keep away hypertension?

Firstly desist from eating deep fried food items and eatables which require a lot of oil for their preparation such as potato chips, fried cashew nuts etc. Oil, during digestion process is transformed to cholesterol. Minimize Grilled foods. Always ask for boiled and steamed food.

Avoid eating meat, as its fat contains a higher concentration of bad cholesterol with chicken being an exception. .It is well and good if you can shun meat forever, if you have a wavering mind at least remove the fats which hang along with the meat. Those portions may be taster than other flesh but what you gain in taste, you lose in health. Beware of that.

The cholesterol content of vegetables is nil. These food stuffs also enhance the fiber content of the body. These fibers aid digestion process. As much as possible, steam the vegetables so that the nutritive content is retained to the maximum possible extent and additives such as oil are eliminated to some extent.

Try to check the amount of food or rice you consume. But for heaven’s sake do not reduce amount of fruit and vegetable intake. Be selective in eating snacks. Try to restrict the quantity of carbohydrates too. Rice, cereals and bread are a rich source of this nutrient.

Replace ordinary or milk bread with wheat bread. Milk may come as different variants. Choose the variant or type of milk packet which has low cholesterol. Vegetables do not add to your body weight. Therefore nothing is wrong in consuming them in surplus.

According to Newton’s third law ” Every action has an equal and opposite reaction “. The same holds good in the case of philosophy as well as our diet. Our health to a large extent is dependent on the type and amount of food we consume daily. You are grown up adults and no more children. Hence desist from the eagerness to consume diets rich in saturated fats. Why to invite troublesome consequences like high blood pressure, coronary heart diseases etc? Remember one thing. There is fire at one end of a cigarette and a fool’s mouth at the other end. Yes. Bad habits also lead to elevated levels of harmful cholesterol. Act proactively and regularly monitor your health. Go for regular health checkups. You may be knowing very well that a person with diabetes or high B.P has a greater risk of heart attacks compared to other normal persons

When something is made a regular habit we will be used to it and the same will become the daily routine of the younger generations too. It is good if you always have oatmeal as the daily breakfast. In case you feel diet to be monotonous or boring weekly once or twice you can have other diets. Researches have proved that regular intake of oatmeal for a period of two weeks reduces cholesterol levels by a whopping twenty percent. Researches had been conducted extensively on other food items too.

Apple is the best among fruits. Studies tell that people who eat at least 2 full apples a day get fifty percent safety. Great figure, indeed!! This fruit is readily available everywhere, you might have heard the proverb “An apple a day keeps the doctor away “. Hence include apple in you daily evening tiffen. Garlic is effective in declogging arteries having fat deposits. Intake of soluble fibers which can be readily obtained from legumes are effective in combating the harmful cholesterol. Do not quarrel with your spouse for including lot of onions in your diet. Onions elevate HDL concentrations.

So there is no need to spend heavily for maintaining your health, especially cholesterol levels. Your longevity thus to ninety percent depends on your habits and activities and to a lesser extent on genetic factors which are beyond human scope of control.

Dont reject all the fats outrightly. Unsaturated fats are healthy for our body promoting the formation of HDL type of cholesterol. Be an alert consumer. In several countries it has been made mandatory by the Government for the manufacturers of food products and creams to publish all the list of ingrediants used for the preparation of those items. So be alert while shopping in the supermarket read the ingrediants content of any food stuff you plan to buy. If you are not able to formulate a proper diet plan seek the help of institutes which are exclusively dedicated for this purpose. Special belts may be used for shedding excess weight.

Reality shows need no introduction. They have gained fame as the happenings are relayed as and when they happen without any lapse in time. No scripting work is involved. In one such reality shows, the concept chosen was to make a group of obese people participate in the live program.

One show that is helping people want to become healthy again is the biggest loser. They would be advised to be on diet or adopt some other strategies to shed their excess weight. At the end of the week the participants are eliminated one after the other on the basis of weight lost during the intermediate time. The person who has shed the maximum weight becomes the winner at the end of three month period.

A hefty amount is conferred on that individual as cash award. Doctors advice us to maintain a slim, and medium body for good sake. So should you expect any gift from others for shedding the excess body weight!! There is a rightly said proverb or dictum “Health is wealth”.

As wall is to a painting so is health to wealth.

You can effectively burn calories and to a great extent hasten the weight-loss process by regular exercising. As the food eaten is burnt quickly to produce calories you will have greater energy to carry out other works after exercising. You have to have a balanced diet, the diet containing all necessary nutrition in the required proportions so that the damaged tissues can be set right and the levels of harmful LDL cholesterol can be brought down.

Intake of bread will restore the energy lost for completing a strenuous work. However remember that conventional bread can push the high cholesterol level upwards. So use wheat bread to eliminate that problem. Add food stuffs like peanut butter which is a food paste made primarily from ground roasted peanuts, without added oil – that is important, as peanut butter can also be prepared by adding oil.

Several people throw away the skins of fruits like apple, mango and goa fruits which are edible ones fit for consumptions. This will reduce the fiber content you take. So change that habit. The same is the case with preparing juices from fruits. So it is better to consume as a whole.

If you are not able to resist the temptation of having a non vegetarian meal always go for chicken instead of mutton. Apart from the substantially high price you pay for mutton, the diet enhances the LDL levels more than what a chicken does. Make it a habit to always use olive oil for preparing dosa’s and idli’s instead of conventional cooking oil. Thus the younger generation will not find it difficult in adapting to this oil at later ages.

Dont throw away Garlic and onions before starting consuming the food or rebuke your spouse for including those items in plenty. They also play a role in bringing down the bad cholesterol concentration.

You have to be patient enough until the cholesterol levels come down to normal. This may take a few weeks to the minimum. Dont give up your efforts in the middle.

Cholesterol stands as the foremost cause in bringing about the death of aged people in addition to causing obesity. Basically cholesterol is a soapy, wax like chemical found in many body tissues and it belongs to the category of lipids. It is an essential nutrient necessary for healthy cell membranes, as well as synthesis of vitamin D and some hormones. Cholesterol is manufactured in the body from digested fats. However, high levels can lead to atherosclerosis, a disease affecting blood vessels and coronary artery disease (CAD). Atheroscelorosis can lead to sudden heart attacks.

The two primary types of this cholesterol are: 1) LDL cholesterol 2) HDL cholesterol. From a layman’s point of view LDL is the bad cholesterol and HDL is the good one. When the amount of LDL cholesterol exceeds the normal limit, it slowly builds up in the inner walls of arteries that supply blood to brain and heart. This is the reason why persons with high cholesterol levels are more prone to heart attacks. What is the reason for increased cholesterol levels? The main reason is diet. Studies reveal that a diet that is a rich source of saturated fat is the major cause for stepping up the LDL cholesterol levels.

On the contrary, The HDL cholesterol is beneficial as it removes the fat deposits from the arteries. So ensure that you include lots of fruits, vegetables in your diet. Omega -3 acids come under the classification of unsaturated fatty acids – that is the chemical composition containing carbon to carbon double bonds. Oils from fishes such as salmon, herring are rich sources of this type of cholesterol.

Apart from diet genetic factors, obesity, smoking and drinking are also known to increase HDL levels. As cholesterol problem is rampant all over the world it is better if youth start focusing on regulating cholesterol levels from age of twenty. Awareness of diets rich in saturated fat, varying percentages of unsaturated fats in different fruits and other diets is necessary at young age. Whole grains, cereals, nuts, leafy vegetables, fruit juices etc have to be a part of everyday diet for senior citizens.

Even if no substantial health ailment is felt, people who have crossed the age of fifty must check their cholesterol levels at least once in every three years. Based on the report let your physician gives his opinion on diets to be included. Remember, some people may be allergic to certain diets. So let your physician monitor your cholesterol regulation process.

Rabbit meat is in demand in several countries for its low cholesterol. Prawns have more cholesterol than chicken. Keep this in mind when visiting a five star hotel. Avoid consuming refined carbohydrates, sugar rich foods. The reason is that if you consume refined carbohydrates they rapidly get converted to glucose during digestion. If you have a high amount of glucose you need a lot of cholesterol to carry the glucose. So your body keeps more cholesterol as reserve.

Reduce the intake of eggs, margarine, ghee, vanaspathi.

Prefer natural-based oils such as olive oils and vegetable oils over conventional cooking oils. In the study at Ankara University in Turkey, investigators examined the effect of heating various oils to 180 degree Celsius. Olive oil fared the best. So use that oil for preparation of your morning breakfast n cooking instead of the usual cooking oil. Usage of garlic in dishes will also bring down the LDL levels. Include Vitamin C and vitamin B3 to step down harmful LDL’s concentration. Vitamin E is also essential. It improves blood circulation. Don’t fail to include the sources of that vitamin too in your diet.

Practically everyone has at least heard of the medical term that becomes somewhat of a concern for the middle-aged population. It would be unusual to find the word come about in a teenage conversation. Undoubtedly, because the threatening health concerns such as high blood pressure, heart attack, diabetes and other chronic illnesses that manifest due to “high cholesterol” levels do not usually adversely affect the juvenile population. Simply put, when most people mention lowering cholesterol, they are referring to the effort of diminishing the accumulation of bad cholesterol.

Yes, there are actually two types of cholesterol in our bodies, good and bad. The harmful type otherwise termed as low-density lipoprotein is detrimental to human health because it can cause atheroma. Atheroma describes the plaque or fat streaks that commonly affect circulation through the arteries over time. If undetected early and left untreated an accumulation of “macrophage white blood cells” can make a member of any age group ill even a child below the age of ten.

It is even possible for certain symptoms to become apparent in a 5 year old and quietly grow in density in the child’s veins as throughout childhood. More commonly however, the more prominent of symptoms are not given diagnosis and attention until one of the more serious illnesses occurs such as stroke or heart attack, at which point it is oftentimes too far-gone to control. The results of such attacks may not always cause death but frequently result in lifetime disability.

It is difficult to picture exactly how high levels of bad cholesterol can wreak serious havoc on the body. People who appear to be healthy may have a potential problem with bad cholesterol, which can only be verified by lab tests. It may be startling to most who discover how high their cholesterol level has actually risen over the years.

It’s not so mysterious how the condition of a high level of bad cholesterol is commonly caused by the over-consumption of saturated fats in one’s diet. In the advent of nutritional information being required by the FDA to print clearly on labels of processed foods such as canned goods and other packaged products at grocery stores, it is easier to determine the amount of cholesterol a food product contains. This is just a small measure to raise public consciousness of the potential problem of high cholesterol.

Another major step in being more conscious about lowering cholesterol understands how the body metabolizes it. Actually it does not come from only from the diet. Diet is just one factor that contributes to the larger process of how your body uses cholesterol in general. As mentioned before there are actually two types of cholesterol. The other being good cholesterol which helps the body in its biochemical production of bile, which regulates fat soluble vitamins such as A, K, D, and E.

Cholesterol also has an impact on the synthesis of the body hormone. When cholesterol has been put to good use within the body, it is then excreted as excess lipids in the liver and gall bladder in the form of crystal particles. Cholesterol is not water soluble, so it circulates continuously and then gets converted to the bad cholesterol (low density lipoproteins). For the average and normal individuals with a healthy metabolism, bad cholesterol is naturally kept to a minimal and comes in as large quantities. The unhealthy process however is when the low density lipoproteins come in many numbers of small sizes that can be trapped in the veins and accumulate as clogs.

Genetic weakness or predisposition is not a significant factor in the matter of maintaining a healthy cholesterol level. The key is watching over the quantity of the kinds of food in the diet. Cholesterol is prominent in animal meats and fats, especially pork and beef. It is much easier to monitor your intake of fatty foods with all the precautions set forth in today’s food market. But the discipline and responsibility truly lies in the hands of the consumer to live a life with less cholesterol consumption.

The urge to satisfy this desire of snacking is so powerful that the individual hardly realizes and thinks practically about the extent of cholesterol contained in the food item. Many of the snacks available at the fast food joints are quiet harmful to health and have made McDonald to specify the calories count, level of cholesterol and similar information on food products sold to the consumer.

Medical attention has been drawn on the ever increasing figures of fat and corpulent people who are in the high risk zone of heart diseases and strokes in the United States.

While it is advisable for the people to annually to visit the doctor for a complete medical examination of the body, it is equally recommended to institute changes in their way of living at the earliest, lest it will be too late. Such life style changes invariably include making changes in food being consumed as an important and vital method of controlling cholesterol levels in the body.

Reduction in consumption of red meat is an important step towards controlling cholesterol levels. Steak, Ham and Bacon are examples of food items rich in fat.

Stopping intake of such items is not easy; therefore for those having risk of heart disease or stroke should start eating smaller portions of food with high fat content.

Hamburgers and fries are examples of food that a person can keep away from to avoid the risk of consuming food items which are rich in fat. Similarly the ingredients and oils used for cooking hamburgers and fries are high in cholesterol and injurious to health. Prepacked frozen foods heated in microwaves are equally harmful to health.

Consumption of milk, eggs and chicken are examples of dairy products which are to be reduced to control cholesterol levels. In case a person finds it difficult to stop consumption of these products, he can switch over to non-fat milk or yogurt which contains essential minerals like calcium.

While kids are young enough and can have junk food, candies and cakes, these foods are avoidable for the older people as the products used to make these foods are rich in fat content.

By this we are to a great extent aware of foods which must be definitely avoided in order to keep the cholesterol levels under check and it is needed to ascertain substitute foods items to plan a suitable diet.

A diet must necessarily have less than 30% fat to reduce cholesterol intake. If you can restrict consumption, your life will be healthier.

Food items like beans, fish, oil, fruits, garlic, soy, vegetables and whole grain foods have minerals, vitamins and omega 3 acids essential to control and reduce cholesterol levels in the body.

The diet can be varied on a daily basis to avoid the food intake becoming monotonous. Dieticians can help plan a healthy diet with changes on weekly basis. These changes and controlled diet will show the effect during visits to the clinic.

Cholesterol is a soft, waxy substance found among fats circulating in the bloodstream and in all of body’s cells. Healthy level of cholesterol is an important for a healthy body. Cholesterol can be good or bad, and so it’s important to learn what it is. The medical term for “good” cholesterol is high-density lipoprotein (HDL). HDL carries cholesterol away from arteries and takes it to the liver, where it’s removed from the body. “Bad” cholesterol is low-density lipoprotein (LDL). Presence of high levels of “bad” cholesterol in the minute veins can clog them, preventing free flow of blood and increase risk of heart attack and stroke. Cholesterol is water-insoluble and so elimination of the same is not possible.

It should be clear that presence of “good” cholesterol is vital for the normal functioning of the body and only the “bad” cholesterol requires attention. Also it should be borne in mind that the cholesterol level is not going up all of a sudden, but because of the careless consumption of cholesterol-rich food over a long period of time. When it is found that the level of bad cholesterol is very high, it may be too late to eliminate the same.

It is also observed that there is direct correlation between cholesterol level and over weight of the body. So obese persons are prone to have high level of cholesterol and are subject to the effects of the same. Also obesity and high level of cholesterol may be inherited and certain drugs and food habits also may cause the same. So it may be a surprise to a normal people to find one day that they are also having high level of cholesterol.

It may come as a surprise when undergoes a clinical test for some other disease that he or she is having high level of cholesterol since the level of knowledge about prevalence of cholesterol is very limited. So it high time that one tries to learn things about cholesterol such as the reasons and the ways to keep it under level.

Food habits are the major reason for increased level of cholesterol. We have to study the foods that increase the cholesterol level and avoid them and identify those foods which help to keep control and eat more of them. It has been established that foods with high level of antioxidants help to maintain the cholesterol level and so we identify them and take more of them.

Also some group of foods help to lower and maintain the cholesterol level which we will see under.

Fibers and oat meal
Dietary fiber is the term for several materials in the parts of plants which our body cannot digest. Fiber is classified as soluble or insoluble. Soluble fiber has been shown to help lower blood cholesterol. Foods high in soluble fiber include oat bran, oatmeal, beans, peas, rice bran, barley, citrus fruits, strawberries and apple pulp. Insoluble fiber doesn’t seem to help lower blood cholesterol. But it’s an important aid in normal bowel function. Foods high in insoluble fiber include whole-wheat breads, wheat cereals, wheat bran, cabbage, beetroot, carrots, turnips, cauliflower and apple skin.

Vegetables and fruits
Fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamins and antioxidants and they rank high in maintaining the cholesterol level. They are highly recommended than other processed or cooked foods. They do not contain fat and it is known that citrus fruit is rich in vitamin C and cucumber is having vitamin E and the antioxidants present in it helps to fight different kinds of diseases.

Fish
Among the non-vegetarian food, fish is highly recommended since it is free from fat. Tuna and other white meat fishes are good choices.

Other than fish, chicken and turkey, free of skin, and liver are also rich in protein and avoid cholesterol.

Yogurt
It helps for good digestion of food since that only controls the acids in the stomach. The low fat content in the yogurt and its role in digestion help to maintain the cholesterol level.
