Low Cholesterol Diet
Majority of people when hearing about cholesterol, on their mind it is really bad and that they would relate it with various illnesses. The misconception is that cholesterol is not bad; in fact our body needs cholesterol in order to survive. Cholesterol is needed in the production of hormones and bile; also it helps in the metabolism of fat soluble vitamins such as the vitamin k. Cholesterol will be considered as a threat when it is above the normal level which is < 200 mg/dL, above this level is considered as hypercholesterolemia. Hypercholesterolemia is a condition when a person is having a high level of cholesterol in the blood, having a high cholesterol level makes a person prone to certain cardiovascular diseases.
For a person to have the normal level of cholesterol a person should learn to identify the foods rich in cholesterol, and formulate to him/ her low cholesterol diet. Foods rich in cholesterol are animal products, egg yolks and dairy products. Knowing these things, a low cholesterol diet should be like this:
Breakfasto 1 cup of toasted oat ring cereal
o 1 cup of skim milk
o 1 slice of whole-wheat bread
o 1 banana
Snack
o 1 cinnamon raisin bagel, 1/2 ounce light cream cheese
Lunch
o Turkey sandwich (3 ounces of turkey) on rye bread with lettuce
o 1 orange
o 3 Fig Newton cookies
o 1 cup skim milk
Snack
o Nonfat yogurt with fruit
Dinner
o 3 ounces of broiled chicken breast
o 1 medium baked potato
o 1 tablespoon of nonfat yogurt
o 1/2 cup of broccoli
o 1 dinner roll
o 1 cup skim milk
As you can observe, the majority of the diet is fruits and vegetables because plants products do not have cholesterol. Plant products are also rich in fiber which helps in peristalsis. Also, instead of having meat, the alternative of meat is tuna and chicken because they have low cholesterol compared to red meat. Tuna is rich in omega 3 fatty acids which is good for the heart. Dairy products are also high in cholesterol that is why when used of having milk, one should choose the low fat or the skimmed milk because they are made to have a low cholesterol level.
Many may ask how to lower cholesterol, and the best way to lower the cholesterol would be having a healthy diet, because the most common cause of hypercholesterolemia is the dietary intake. Therefore, to manage it one should have a healthy diet first and identifying the foods with high cholesterol. Though, exercise is also helpful, diet should be considered first because ones a person can control his/her diet, there is a great chance for that person to lower the cholesterol level. There are plenty of low cholesterol diet around but then a person should consider the availability of the foods listed therefore, what is around you, you can utilize it once you can identify the foods rich in cholesterol.
